Tammuz Organization participates in delegation of the network of Iraqi women to homeless women’s shelter

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, represented by our colleague Inas Jabbar, Tammuz Organization for Social Development participated in the delegation of the Women Network to pay a visit to the homeless women’s shelter in Al- Salikh district and met its director. The purpose of the visit was to identify the conditions of the shelter and the reality of its inmates as well as the most important challenges facing the administration of the shelter and the inmates. The director of the shelter stated that the number of girls in the shelter is 60 beneficiaries aged (8 to 23 years). The shelter has 3 female researchers appointed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, 16 guards working alternately and 6 female employees. They also have medical committees consisting of a psychiatrist, family medicine specialist and a female pharmacist, who are all doctors of Al-Nu'man Hospital. The maximum age allowed for a girl to stay in the shelter is 22 years. If she exceeds that age, she remains in the shelter as a volunteer without any wages or salary, but only for her residence in the shelter. There is an intention to file a petition addressed to the ministry to allocate monthly allowances of social welfare for them, which is about (100 thousand Iraqi dinars) for each girl. It also found that the most basic requirements for beneficiaries are not provided by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and when addressing them about that, they attribute the reason to the poor financial allocations. Therefore, some of these requirements are provided by donations received by civil society organizations. The most important challenges facing them are the large number of responsibilities, and the lack of staff as the shelter lacks to a specialized staff in addition to the lack of janitors. As for the girls’ education, the administration explained that there is a teaching staff consisting of five teachers, who teach girls until the end of primary school, and those who wish to complete their studies can apply for study outside the shelter.

The shelter also has a month-long entertainment program offered by a civil society organization, as well as some entertainment services in the shelter itself. The delegation stressed on the need to adopt programs that contribute to empowering girls and helping them to integrate into society and the need to combine the efforts of the state and the organizations’ to rehabilitate these girls and improve their bitter status and taking care of the shelter by providing the necessary and basic needs as well as the necessary protection by the official authorities in order to provide the best for this group In the best form, for the public inters.
