Tammuz Organization Participates in Iraqi women’s network delegation to visit legal committee member in Iraqi Parliament

On Sunday 26 May 2019, represented by our colleague Inas Jabbar, Tammuz Organization for Social development participated in a delegation of the Iraq women’s network, which met MP Dr. Abdul Bari Al-Muddares, legal committee member in the Iraqi parliament. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the draft of anti-domestic violence law and that was within the pressure campaign launched by the network to pass the law.

Dr. Abdulbari Al-Muddares welcomed the delegation and clarified that he had worked on submitting the law, he also made some notes and recommendations about it, and promised to discuss the draft so that he could find a perfect form for it, subsequently, he would forward it to be reviewed and discussed and finally to include it within the legal context and to have it presented to Parliament.

He also affirmed on the need to turn to those who oppose the law and to coordinate with MP Haiffa Al-ameen, head of women & childhood committee in the Iraqi Parliament, he also stressed on the need to create a space for dialogue to listen to their reasons of rejecting the law and having them discussed in sessions, seminars, or workshops to reach a formula of understanding and clarification of the importance of the law and the articles & clauses it should include.

The delegation affirmed that this way is followed by the network since the previous cycle as the efforts had registered notable results to convince several parties, however, there was not enough determination to pass the law back then unfortunately.

As for anti- domestic violence law, it is considered as a special law on which the committee has been working hard for having it passed for it would achieve goals that would feed into the Iraqi family interest.

Dr. Abdulbari stated that he would work on the law and that he would never go back on his decision to support the law and its pass, however, what is more important is the pressure practiced by civil society organizations and their role in intensifying efforts through holding seminars and dialogue sessions with all parties, supporters and opponents, and raising awareness on its importance.

At the end of the meeting, Dr.Abdulbari appreciated the role of Iraqi civil society organizations, especially, after that a number of them have proven their important role in adopting issues of relevance to society and achieved notable accomplishments. He also affirmed that he would be a big supporter to pass the law of anti-domestic violence. It is worth mentioning that Tammuz Organization for Social Development is one of the organizations that seek to the achievement of a human rights & democracy protective legal system. In this regard, it launched and contributed in the launching of several campaigns to pass, amend or annul certain laws. Also, Tammuz Organization is a member of the coordinative committee of the Iraqi women’s network.
