Women’s Leading Skills Empowering Workshop

 

Tammuz Organization for Social Development participated in the workshop (Empowering Leadership Skills for Women) which was held in Erbil for the period 21-24 September 2019 at the invitation of the Iraqi Women Network and the Iraqi Hope Association and with the support of the Dutch organization (PAX), and this workshop is considered within the series of workshops held within the campaign ( The family is safe) to push for the approval of the law to combat domestic violence during the current parliamentary cycle.

During the workshop, many topics were discussed that would develop leadership skills for women, and enable them to conduct meetings with decision makers and training on ways to persuade and neutralize them to vote towards adopting the law during the current parliamentary session.

The first day of the workshop included the presentation and discussion of the Law on Protection from Family Violence (Opportunities and Challenges).

Then, the policy papers and the results of the Human Security Survey were presented and discussed, the report and discussion of the Sexual Violence Survey 2019 report and the analysis of gender-based forms of violence among the survivors' stories were presented and discussed.

As for the second day, it included various topics about empowering women's leadership skills, estimating the self-leadership of the participants, and analyzing the leadership strengths of the participants.

Then the speaker addressed the concepts of gender and gender-based violence, and also touched on the "gender" concept and terminology, "Gender-based violence" concept, types, challenges and impacts.

In addition to empower active communication skills (non-verbal communication) through: 

-specify feelings.

-safe distance.

-body language.

-Eye-to-eye contact.

- Facial expressions.

As for the third day, it included empowering skills of active communication (non-verbal communication) through:

-Summarization.

-Reforming (observing and description and separating them from judgments).

-Ordering (Message).

In addition to enabling effective communication skills by enabling participants on public speaking skills, effective listening skills, the foundations of negotiation and persuasion methods, brainstorming and how to express dissenting opinion, a role play scenario was worked out where a group took the role of decision makers and another group took the role of women defenders of the law.

As for the fourth day, it included how to work with the media, the basics of crafting a message against domestic violence, and the most important skills of including strong, expressive and clear phrases to gain support and persuade opponents.

Among the most important outputs of the workshop is the organization of a press conference in the Iraqi parliament in cooperation with the Women and Childhood Committee, to launch the campaign and start conducting meetings with decision makers to press towards the law’s adoption, in addition to holding seminars and awareness-raising workshops on the importance of the law and its role in curbing the spread of increased cases of violence in society.

The workshop was concluded by planting trees by the participants in an expression of safety, optimism and belief in working towards a safe environment free from violence.
