Sessions to Discuss Electoral Law

Sessions to Discuss Electoral Law

Tammuz organization participated in a dialogue session organized by Al-Noor Institution to discuss the Electoral law under the title of (We observe). The session took place on 15 -10-2020 and it was like a mission among MPs, social activists and civil society organizations who organize for the establishment of sessions in eight Iraq governorates to be familiar with the public point of view on the electoral law, in this session, which was held at the petroleum center, a number of young men and men, who participated in protests of 2019, attended the session  in the presence of academic figures , a representative of the IHEC –Kharkh side in addition to a former MP and civil society organizations representatives.

Tammuz organization’s activities on the electoral law were addressed as well as the difficulties and seriousness of little districts, most attendees expressed their declination to multiple   districts even that protestors stated that their demand was a fair

Electoral law which could keep the corrupted parties and blocs away from power and that they did not ask for small districts.

The most important things mentioned in the session were as follows:

-there are more than 330 vacant positions in the IHEC and the hiring process to find replacements take some time.

-there are more than 6,500,000    who did not finish their education for different reasons why are they forbidden from running to elections? That’s  a political unjust for them and against the international covenant concerning civil and political rights.

-the demand to adjust the candidate age for young people in accordance with parties law.

-there was an important question and that was: will parties’ law be applied on individuals who run for elections with single lists or not?  There was not any answer to this question that had not been discussed before.

It’s worth mentioning that Tammuz Organization for Social development had held five cyber workshops on the electoral law and challenges accompanying it and also had prepared a detailed report including the most important points that had been noted on the controversial law.
