Workshop to Empower Female Journalists

The National Syndicate of Journalists in Iraq, in partnership with the Tammuz Organization for Social Development, carried out its first workshop to empower Iraqi women journalists, which was held in Baghdad for the period 19-23 August 2020 at the Sindbad Palace Hotel hall with the participation of 18 journalists from different governorates of Iraq, and the workshop dealt with 3 main axes:
- Preparing the press release and newspaper stories, the structure and elements of the news story, the difference between the story and the news, the structure of building investigative reports.
Gender and its most important concepts, media coverage from a gender perspective, the role of the media in shaping societal values.
Promoting and using mobile technology and how to convert media materials into flash video.
The project manager, our colleague Yasser Al-Salem / President of the National Syndicate of Journalists, opened the workshop with a welcoming speech to the participating colleagues, hoping that they would contribute to developing their expertise in the field of journalism and within the aforementioned axes, to prepare a generation of female journalists who are able to confront journalism in Iraq and address several important political and societal issues.
This was followed by a speech by our colleague, project coordinator, Enas Jabbar / member of the Tammuz Organization for Social Development, welcoming our female colleagues, wishing that the workshop would achieve its goals in developing the capabilities of the participants and be an excellent opportunity for them to develop their work in the field of journalism and media. The workshop included the attendance of Dr. Irada Al-Jubouri / Associate Dean of the College of Media, who spoke about the importance of the role of women in the media, as she indicated the importance of reading in developing the skills of the journalist.
In addition to Dr. Azhar Sabih / Vice President of the National Syndicate of Journalists who put forward a set of recommendations that will develop Iraqi women journalists and legally defend their rights.
The workshop included the preparation of working groups and effective discussions by the participating colleagues who expressed the distinction of the issues and topics that were addressed over the course of the workshop, and emphasized their continued commitment to the requirements of the program in terms of preparing the reports required from them and enriching the electronic platform that will be provided with topics and news & journalist reports And the prepared by them. The workshop ended with the distribution of certificates of attendance and thanking the participating colleagues for their commitment and interaction in the workshop, and this thanks is connected to wishes for them for success in their journalistic and media work, whether within or outside the program. It is also worth noting the commitment of the organization and the participants to the recommendations of the Health and Safety for All Committee and the care of social distancing, fogging and prevention for the sake of public and private safety.
