Gender—yes to equality no for the difference

Gender—yes to equality no for the difference

Tammuz Organization for Social Development and in cooperation with Fredrich Ebert Foundation, held the fifth training workshop of the third class of “Young Leaders Program”. The workshop main object was “Gender” and lasted for two days 13-14-November-2020 in Erbil with the presence 18 young men & women from all over Iraq, Ms. Elham Makki was the trainer of the workshop and in opening of the workshop the commitment to health conditions and protocols has been emphasized in order to keep everyone safe.

Day 1: Training was the subject of Gender, where the gender is a social and cultural process which is continuously produced, a social structure of ideas that define roles, beliefs systems, situations, values and expectations for men and women. It significantly contributes in power relations, life forming, opportunities, rights, resources access and relationships between men and women.

The distinction between gender norms and individual behaviors has been clarified, as the standards express societal pressures (embarrassment, isolation, boycott, physical violence, and death) that drive behavior in a specific way, while individual behaviors can rebel against these standards. It is important to realize that all institutions Entrenched for these concepts resist change.

It is one of the most important characteristics that distinguish masculinity from femininity. That is, masculinity (rationality, activity, courage, organization in thinking, love of competition, bearing responsibility, independence, ability to bear, willingness to risk confrontation, ability to make decisions, domination, expression of negative feelings). Femininity (passion, tenderness / love for children, obedience, sacrifice, conviction, discipline / sincerity, decency / tendency to serve others, kindness / calmness, sensitivity, beauty, modesty / preservation of traditions, expression of negative feelings, the private / work in the private sphere. ).

The most important gender roles have been summarized as the roles that are defined on the basis of biological differences for both sexes and become over time within the biological determinants of both sexes, and the departure from these roles becomes a violation of the nature of the biological structure, the productive role includes the production of goods and services in order to obtain an income or from In order to earn a living and this work is recognized in general, the socio-cultural role This role includes actions that usually take place in the public sphere and includes cultural and social activities and leads to a greater position in society and usually men have more time to fulfill this role than women.

On the second day, the trainer discussed the international and policy framework for gender equality, the historical development of women's rights within international conventions and treaties to achieve gender equality, and got acquainted with Iraq's position on those treaties, Among the topics that were identified was equality versus justice - Equality: It refers to the similarity and equality in the legal treatment of individuals (the constitution) and the equality found in the divine scripts , which is the basis of rights. - Justice: It refers to the fair division of resources, opportunities and benefits according to the framework. It is one of the procedures that follow to reach equality, but it is not the only fairness (justice) can be measured and it shows parity and experience shows that justice is used instead of equality within institutions, this means that justice is imposed The principle of equality When women enter institutions according to men's conditions without equality being discovered or benefited from, justice is often seen as something desirable and the basis for the right is equality.

The international mechanisms that guarantee women's rights have also been defined, i.e. how women's rights have evolved within international charters and conventions, the United Nations Charter 1945, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, the Convention on the Political Rights of Women 1952, the Convention on the Nationality of Married Women 1957, the Convention on Marriage (consent / contracts) The age of marriage ...) 1962, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights 1966. The Universal Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women 1967, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women 1979, the Universal Declaration against Violence against Women 1993, Beijing Declaration and Program of Action 1995, Optional Protocol to the 2000 Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women The workshop ended after two days of intensive training on important topics and information, as the training included a review of multiple videos in which the concepts of gender and equality were explained .. No difference, based on the evaluation of the majority of young people participating in the workshop, it was described as an important and effective workshop that was used. At the conclusion of the training workshop, our colleague Vian Sheikh Ali, President of Tammuz Organization for Social Development, thanked and appreciated the trainer and all participants for the interaction and commitment to attend and participate and adhere to the terms and health protocols.
