Using Citizen Journalism Tools to Enhance Social Cohesion


The Tammuz Organization for Social Development, in cooperation with the Sabq Center for Media Development and in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), held its third training workshop within the project (Using Citizen Journalism Tools to Enhance Social Cohesion), over a period of five days during the period 13-17 January 2021 in Baghdad. In the presence of 19 young men / women from six Iraqi governorates.

The training workshop was inaugurated with a welcoming speech by the head of the Sabq Center for Media Development colleague Yasser Al-Salem, stressing that the Sabq Center for Media Development has worked to establish a Tanaawa media platform, which will support young journalists of both sexes by providing the opportunity to publish media content in various journalistic fields with a focus on Social and humanitarian issues, and confirmed that the Sabaq Center for Media Development and the Tammuz Organization for Social Development will follow up the female and male journalists and the extent of their journalistic development during the project period.

The training was conducted in the first two days by trainer Khader Domali on the topic of "social cohesion and peace building", where the first day was devoted to explaining the most prominent effects resulting from the conflicts that occurred in society - especially those effects and results that affect societal stability in the long term and as effects that the citizen does not notice. Direct and often these results are the reason for pushing activists to write about the effects of the conflict and a cause for fueling or incitement as part of a sense of grievance towards the loss of opportunities, their voices being heard, the lack of justice and fairness, or as part of personal plans or methodology to drop the charges and distort The titles, also dealt in detail with issues of social cohesion and peacebuilding for post-conflict societies, and the foundations and components of social cohesion.

On the second day, he explained the community initiatives and the steps for their implementation and how to show them in the media to contribute to enhancing community cohesion, and the challenges that stand in the way of implementing social cohesion initiatives, and he also touched upon the selection of topics for youth initiatives to enhance social cohesion.

 The third day of the workshop started with the trainer Muhammad Abdullah over a period of three days, who trained on topics related to selecting and telling stories and their types, which may be personal stories, community stories, or topics of changing attitudes, or help and support, confronting hate speech, or topics related to promoting Diversity and pluralism, such as stories of intermarriage between different societies, stories of women survivors, stories of youth for joint work and communication, stories and obstacles to the front of the integration of societies.

He also gave an explanation of the image (its types. Its significance, a distinctive shot), explaining through a practical exercise how to take pictures, and an explanation of mobile applications for photography and editing.

The fourth day of the workshop, which was devoted to explaining the photography board and its types, how to use the Quik application, and how to create online content and a story.

On the fifth day, trainer Mohamed Abdullah continued training on topics of the importance of citizen journalism and the impact of technology on it, reviewing the results and identifying the most influential social platforms. He divided the participants into groups to write and document stories. July for Social Development by presenting an overview of the organization, its work and its goal in implementing this project as part of empowering youth, which represents one of the main areas of the organization's work, and confirmed the organization's welcome in all contact and cooperation with young people participating in its activities and its keenness to maintain communication to activate the role of youth and enhance their participation in social and political life She also thanked the project staff for all the efforts and the trained professors who shared their experiences with the participants. Participation certificates were distributed, wishing them success in their media and civic career.

Note that the project of using citizen journalism tools to enhance social cohesion includes the governorates (Baghdad, Diyala, Anbar, Dhi Qar, Najaf, Salah al-Din, Nineveh and Kurdistan Region) includes six training workshops, three of which were held during the periods 3-7 December And 27-23 December 2020 in Baghdad, in addition to this workshop, the remaining three workshops will be held in Baghdad and Erbil in the coming period.
