Training workshop about “Comprehensive Justice Methodologies and Dealing with the Past”

Tammuz Organization for Social Development, upon the invitation of the Iraqi Al-Amal Association, took part in a training workshop on “Comprehensive Justice Methodologies and Dealing with the Past”, which was held in Baghdad for the period 6-8 January 2022.

The workshop witnessed the attendance of several representatives of civil society organizations and of study centers. This workshop is part of a project that aims to build the capacities of local civil society organizations and government officials to integrate into dialogue and exchange consultations on the issues of truth-disclosure, justice, and equity initiatives in Iraq, besides developing skills and knowledge and giving space for dialogue and building partnerships to achieve restorative justice.

The workshop discussed several topics, the most important of which were the "conceptual framework for dealing with the past" and the right to justice, judicial procedures, criminal justice in addition to the role of victims and their participation and the role of civil society in helping to achieve justice and others.

On the last day of the workshop, government agencies were hosted, represented by representatives of the Commission for Human Rights, and challenges and problems were put on the dialogue table with representatives of civil society organizations to reach appropriate solutions to adopt the issue of transitional justice and how to advance it.

It was also agreed on the need to unify efforts to work in a participatory manner, not only to achieve transitional justice, but to work with guarantees of non-repetition of the past and to empower victims and redress their harm.
