Towards a Restorative Transitional Justice in Iraq

The Tammuz Organization for Social Development, in cooperation with Iraqi Al-Amal Association, organized a symposium entitled "Towards a Restorative Transitional Justice in Iraq" on the occasion of the activities of the seventh season of the Iraqi Social Forum,

The symposium was attended by a group of activists of various ages and specializations, where the symposium was opened by colleague Ali Al-Dujaili, welcoming the audience, then Mr. Ghaith Aqeel followed by explaining the concept of transitional justice and its definition, in addition to its pillars and the basic principles of restorative justice, which were represented by reparation for harm to society, confrontation and inclusion, transforming attitudes and behaviors, and responsibility of the state.

The symposium was attended by a group of activists of various ages and specializations, and the seminar was opened by colleague Ali Al-Dujaili, welcoming the audience. Mr. Ghaith Aqeel explained the concept of transitional justice and its definition, in addition to its pillars and the basic principles of restorative justice, which were represented by reparation for harm to society, confrontation, and inclusion, respectively transforming attitudes and behaviors, and responsibility of the state.

After that, the door for interventions and discussion was opened about what was raised during the symposium, and most of them emphasized:

- Enhancing communication with the relevant government agencies to discuss the issue of restorative transitional justice and the possible measures to be taken.

- Work to raise awareness and build the capacities of workers in organizations about transitional justice

The media should interact with civil society organizations to spread awareness about restorative transitional justice and others.

It is worth noting that transitional justice is defined as the full set of processes and mechanisms associated with a society's attempt to reconcile with a widespread legacy of past conflict, repression, violations or abuses, with the aim of ensuring accountability and achieving justice and reconciliation. These processes may include both judicial and non-judicial mechanisms. Including fact-finding, prosecution initiatives, compensation and various measures to prevent the recurrence of violations.
